Thanks to supporters like you, we turned the tide in Mississippi on Tuesday. State voters rejected Initiative 26, a measure that would have defined personhood as beginning at fertilization.
Promoters of this ballot measure expected it to pass in such a conservative state. They thought they could trick Mississippians into voting for an amendment that would actually ban common birth control methods and infertility treatments, not to mention placing women's lives at risk.
But your generous donation helped the statewide Mississippi coalition buy television and radio ads to educate voters about the real scope of Initiative 26. At the same time, grassroots NOW leaders and activists joined together with other women's rights supporters to organize rallies, spread the word and bring people to the polls.
In the end, we defeated the amendment by an encouraging margin of 58 to 42 percent. Yes, it sounds close, but even our side thought it would come down to one or two points.
NOW vows to continue working aggressively to educate voters and stop personhood campaigns in other states. This victory provides us with the momentum we need to stand up to the national personhood movement and all efforts to undermine Roe v. Wade.
We must protect a woman's right to access the full range of reproductive health care options. Your help makes this important work possible. Please accept my heartfelt thanks!
