PETITION LETTER
Feminists Demand Freedom from Sexual Assault and Harassment
We agree:
Rape is always about power and domination; it is sexualized violence.

Rape and sexual harassment of women are pervasive at all strata of society and in all corners of the globe. Women will never be fully free and able to enjoy equality with men until this ends. As feminists, we see the arrest of former International Monetary Fund director Dominique Strauss-Kahn on sexual assault charges as an opportunity to increase public awareness and as a wake-up call to renew action against sexual violence, not only in the US where his arrest occurred and in France, where media and many public figures are portraying him as the victim, but around the world.

We join French feminists in saying that just as Strauss-Kahn is innocent until proven guilty, his accuser must also be respected and believed to be credible unless proven false. We commend her employer, Sofitel, and the action of the NYC Police for taking her complaint seriously. We call for feminists around the world to join with her union (New York Hotel and Motel Trades Council Local 6) in collecting funds for legal and daily expenses, as her work is now curbed and life circumstances vastly altered. Contributions can be sent to Judson Memorial Church (attention Women's Fund) 55 Washington Square South, New York, NY 10012-1018, or online at https://secure.acceptiva.com/?cst=ab6736 (write "women's fund" in the comments box).

We also share French feminist indignation at the deliberate and opportunistic confusion of seduction and sexual violence, from Strauss-Kahn's declaration that he "loves women," to the journalists and politicians who rally behind this "Great Seducer." It is outrageous that the allegation of attempted rape during the course of a housekeeper's work day raises issues about any woman's life story and sexual history. And portraying powerful Strauss-Kahn as "too civilized" to commit a violent crime plays upon colonial and racist stereotypes vis-à-vis an African immigrant woman.

We adamantly oppose all harassment, sexual violence and rape, and we know that when there is a large discrepancy between the power, the wealth and racial hierarchy of the parties involved, justice is even harder to come by. All rapists and harassers believe they are entitled, and often when they are part of the power elite they assume that influence will outweigh the legal protection and freedom from coercion all women should enjoy. Feminists around the world demand that justice be done.

Women of all countries, unite!

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!

Activism Works! Dominique Strauss-Kahn Quits in Wake of Charges of Sexual Attack

Jerin

Thanks to all of you who attended the NOW rally to oppose rape, in front of IMF's headquarters in DC, and asked for Dominique Strauss-Kahn's resignation from IMF.  Thanks also to those of you who mobilized in other ways to speak out against violence against women.  Thanks to your activism, Dominique Strauss-Kahn resigned yesterday.

You can still send a message to his alleged victim, who "feels alone in the world."   A sexual assault is horrific enough - to compound  that with being an: immigrant, single mom, poor, and woman of color brings additional layers to that trauma.  We have been receiving notes of encouragement for her from across the globe, from New York to Switzerland.  If you would like to send her a message, please comment on this post with a note, or email us at youngfeminists at gmail.com.  If you like, please include your name and location, so we can show her there are people from all over the world who care about her.  We are compiling the messages and sending them to the publicist.   Thank you.

Petition for Healthy Relationship Education and Dating Violence Prevention Policy in NYC Schools (Start Strong Bronx)

Recently, the New Jersey legislature became the seventh state to pass a law requiring school districts to provide dating violence education, following the trailblazing states of Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Rhode Island, and Nebraska. We, the undersigned New Yorkers, want to join our fellow Americans in this pioneering movement to educate and empower youth to build safe and healthy relationships because, as Secretary of Education Arnie Duncan says, “No school can be a great school until it is a safe school first.” We hope you'll sign the petition and help us get as many adult and student signatures from NYC residents as possible. Start Strong Bronx will bring them to the next Panel for Educational Policy (PEP) meeting. For more information, please visit the full announcement

Partnering with Parents to Deliver Sex Education: The Adult Role Models (ARM) Program  (Planned Parenthood)

While numerous and recent studies document the importance of involving parents in sexuality education and unplanned teen pregnancy prevention efforts, there is still a lack of resources for organizations seeking to more strategically engage and educate parents.   The Adult Role Models (ARM) program is a parent-peer education program designed to provide parents with the information and skills they need to become the primary sexuality educators of their children.  The ARM program has published an online Manual to help agencies to develop or strengthen their own parent-peer education programs.  This webinar will guide participants through the Manual’s contents and answer questions commonly asked about the ARM program.  We will also present preliminary data and findings from our randomized controlled trial, which is measuring the ARM program’s impact on parents and teen sexual health outcomes.  For more information, please visit the

Send a message to a victim of sexual assault: Strauss-Kahn's victim

Jerin

The following was sent to me by one of NOW's founders, Sonia Pressman Fuentes, who is being honored at the national NOW conference in June.

About the victim: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/imf_head_assault
"Her life has now been turned upside down. She can't go home. She can't go back to work. She has no idea what her future will be, what she will be able to do to support herself and her daughter. This has been nothing short of a cataclysmic event in her life," Shapiro said. He said she "feels alone in the world."

I cannot imagine what she is going through.  A sexual assault is horrific enough - to compound  that with being an: immigrant, single mom, poor, and woman of color brings additional layers to that trauma.  I want her to know that we are there with her in spirit, as she has to go over the traumatic details yet once again in front of the grand jury - another room full of strangers who are judging HER innocence.

I am going to email/call her lawyer's publicist with a copy of Terry O'Neill's post about it on The Huffington Post, and a personal note from me.  If you would like to send her a message, please comment on this post with a note, or email us at youngfeminists at gmail.com.  If you like, please include your name and location, so we can show her there are people from all over the world who care about her.  We are compiling the messages and sending them to the publicist.   Thank you.

Please find below the email Sonia sent to the publicist of the lawyer representing the maid, telling her she is not alone.

Hi Lois:

We talked a few minutes ago while you were trying to eat.

I'm a retired attorney, a public speaker, author, and feminist and community activist.  On June 25, at NOW's annual conference in Tampa, FL, I'll be given an award for being a co-founder of NOW and for my groundbreaking work at the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity  Commission).

I just read an article where Jeffrey Shapiro stated that the maid who was allegedly attacked by Strauss-Kahn feels alone in the world.  Can you get a message to her that she is not alone in the world?  America's women and the world's women support her.  NOW supports her.

I've just suggested that at NOW's conference her case be discussed.

Please let me know how we can help.

Best,
Sonia

Action Alert: Tell city council to Cut Sexual Violence Out of NYC, Not Out of the Budget

Jerin

From NYC Alliance Against Sexual Assault
Sexual violence affects all New Yorkers, regardless of class, race, gender expression, sexual orientation or age. It is estimated that in a city of 8 million residents, that over 1.2 million women and 200,000 men have been sexually assaulted in their life. Anti-sexual violence programs work tirelessly to help survivors heal and to develop safer communities. In 2011, organizations doing crucial anti-sexual violence work in New York City are woefully underfunded. The limited funding available to these organizations makes victims of sexual violence in New York City a truly underserved population. We urge the City Council to stand with us against sexual violence and support the city wide Sexual Assault Initiative for $720,000 in the 2012 budget.

We hope you'll sign the
petition today!

FREE training on how to reduce & prevent domestic violence

Jerin

Two different opportunities: Saturday 5/21 & Tuesday 5/31.  We will provide lunch.

In less than 2 months, there were 12 domestic-violence-related murders in NYC.  Help bring the number down to zero.

Project Speak Out is a new initiative in which four Asian-American domestic-violence agencies in NYC (New York Asian Women’s Center, Sakhi for South Asian Women, Korean American Family Service Center, and Garden of Hope) are working on a unique project to reduce and PREVENT domestic violence in NY’s Asian-American communities.  http://nynp.biz/breaking-news/5707-project-speak-out-creates-pan-asian-voice-against-domestic-violence-

Instead of organizations going into communities to talk about domestic violence, volunteers themselves will interact with their fellow neighbors, friends, and families to change individual & community attitudes & behaviors toward domestic violence.  As Project Speak Out volunteers, these community members, who might speak the language or share the culture of their audience, will make sure that three core messages are passed on:
1.    Domestic violence DOES EXIST in our communities
2.    Women are not to be blamed for the violence perpetrated against them
3.    YOU as an individual/group CAN TAKE ACTION! (and suggest ways to take that action)

We will train you on what domestic violence is and how to engage and mobilize individuals and groups in communities to take action!

We will go over the following topics during the training:
•    Bringing in the Bystander: A Prevention Workshop for Establishing a Community of Responsibility
•    Domestic violence
•    Asian-Americans & domestic violence
•    Project Speak Out
•    Outreach & Activities: Role of Volunteer, Resources

You do NOT need to speak an Asian language to volunteer
**Please note: quite a few of the New York Asian Women’s Center employees started as volunteers.

Action Alert: Woman-Hating Anti-Abortion Rights Vote This Week

Jerin

NOW Action Alert
Woman-Hating Anti-Abortion Rights Vote This Week
After taking action, please support our work!
TAKE ACTION: Urge your representative vote against H.R.3!
H.R.3, the deceptively named No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, is up for a vote in the House of Representatives this week. One of several dangerous pieces of legislation in this 112th Congress, H.R.3 would permanently reinforce a ban on federal funding for abortion care and levy ideological tax penalties on millions of families and businesses -- effectively parceling out women's constitutional rights on the basis of ability to pay, with racist as well as sexist outcomes.
Please call and email right away to demand your representative vote against this extremist, woman-hating bill.
BACKGROUND:
Sponsored by Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), H.R.3 would:
Codify the Hyde Amendment
H.R.3 would codify a collection of federal abortion funding restrictions referred to as the Hyde Amendment. Under the Hyde Amendment, federal funding of abortion care is segregated from all other forms of health care and severely restricted. This grave injustice puts women's health and lives at risk, disproportionately affecting women of color. For more than 30 years, extremists have bullied Congress into re-approving these federal funding restrictions annually through the appropriations process. Rep. Smith, Speaker Boehner and other ideologues in the House leadership now hope to make this harmful process permanent.
Critically, this legislation, a core part of the right-wing "War on Women," would limit the health exception for women seeking abortions. The radical conservatives within the House of Representatives are determined to expand and make permanent law this racist, sexist and compassionless strategy to use economic coercion to effectively overturn Roe v. Wade.
Restrict Private Spending and Increase Taxes
The "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act" is deceptively named because it doesn't stop with federal funding. It also would levy tax penalties on millions of families and businesses using private insurance plans that happen to cover abortion care, and it would restrict the use of individuals' private health savings accounts to cover abortion care -- thus encouraging the Internal Revenue Service to conduct "abortion audits" on women's tax returns. Rightly dubbed "Stupak on Steroids," H.R.3 goes much farther than the "compromise" inserted into the Affordable Care Act restricting private insurance coverage of abortion care in the new health exchanges.
Additional brutal provisions of H.R.3 would narrow the definition of incest and make permanent restrictions on the use of local funds for abortion care in the District of Columbia.
Demand your representative vote against this extremist, woman-hating bill.

Action Alert: Oppose Court-Ordered Visitation of children with Convicted Sex Offenders

Jerin

National Organization for Women-NYS Decries Court Ordered Visitation with Convicted Sex Offenders
Click on this link to contact Governor Cuomo & your state legislature.

Court Ordered, Visitation with Convicted Pedophiles/Sex Offenders is dangerous for women and children.

ALBANY, NY 4/20/11 The New York State Appellate Division 3rd Department recently affirmed the outrageous decision of a Saratoga Family Court Judge Courtenay Hall, ordering a five year old girl visitation in a maximum security prison, with her father, a convicted pedophile. Mr. Culver plead guilty to twenty-nine counts of first degree sexual abuse after molesting eight of his first grade students. He was afforded a free attorney to drag his ex wife through the Family Court, forensics and the Appellate Court, all on the taxpayers dime. Though the Appellate Court overturned the lower courts order for the mother to absorb the cost for the child's 3 hour transportation and escort fees, the child's mother, who committed no crime, lost her right to decide what is best for her daughter and now they both are court ordered to suffer the consequences of this mans crimes.

In June 2010, Sukhwant Herb of Brooklyn, NY, was sentenced to 50 days in Rikers Island for refusing to allow her 9-year old son to visit with his father who is a convicted serial rapist father in an Arizona prison. She was denied bail, and though technically not charged with a crime, she served 19 days before public outrage and a Daily News article won her an early release. Brooklyn Family Court Judge Robin Sheares is still a sitting judge though reassigned to Civil Court. The father, Seon Jonas, was able to obtain a visitation order while in jail.

Suffolk County Family Court Judge, Andrew Tarantino, granted overnight visits for children whose father was convicted of third-degree rape of a minor and possessing child pornography. The judge refused to hear expert testimony and stated in his decision, "to consider sinister every activity in which there may be contact may approach paranoia in some circumstances and this court can not render a decision based upon paranoia". Notably Judge Tarantino was recently censured for taking a teenage litigant to an out of the way beach park for a chat without notifying his attorney or opposing council. The young man has since committed suicide. Judge Tarantino has been reassigned though still a sitting judge.

These orders defy common sense and ignore the laws that are set up to protect citizens and their children. It further exemplifies how judges have been given too much discretion and too little oversight. Judges do not have to detail the reasons for their decisions that are often made on personal preferences rather than legal precedent and suffer little to no consequences for the damage they do. Though commissions were set up to address these matters, we still see no ability for the court to correct itself.

Along with NOW-NYS, urge the NYS Assembly to pass common sense legislation immediately halting all court ordered, forced visitation with pedophiles and sex offenders. We ask that all taxpayer funded programs used for this purpose be cut off immediately and completely. Finally, we ask for a means to remove bad judges. They suffer no consequences for their actions and their actions are often careless and dangerous.

Demand that Judges stop forcing moms to give child visitation to child molesters

YoungFeminists

The following action alert is a result of many bad examples of judges forcing mothers to let convicted sex offenders visit their children, sometimes overnight.  These programs of reunifying serial rapists/child molesters through prison visitation with their very young children, is done at the expense of taxpayer money.  Here are some examples, provided by Tracy of Mid-Suffolk NOW:

Those of us who try to "stay in the know" with court trends in trendy NY cant help but notice the new fashion in court orders is: keep your child close to a child molester.
Below are 3 separate news articles involving NYS judges ordering children visitation with their fathers/ serial rapists/child molesters. 2 have been transferred with the office of court administration refusing to reveal their new job or location, though they did say they have not been fired. The 3rd is still in place as a higher court upheld the decision.
Remember the good old days when thousands of children were taken away from mothers and put in foster care because mom didn't grab those kids and run away from the abusive father far enough, even if they had nowhere to go, no money to get them there, or too beaten down themselves? Now, what do we tell people who discover their children have been abused? Get cozy cause the court will be ordering them back to daddy anyway? The legal standard states the court must act in "the best interests of the child". I bet some of you are really confused right now, so let me clarify this
The fashion this Spring for NY ladies is....damned if you do....damned if you don't. Be sure to pass this on to all the ladies "in the know " that you know, don't know.
    Case #1 Saratoga County
In a 3-2 decision, the Appellate Division, Third Department, in Culver v. Culver, affirmed that part of a Saratoga County Family Court decision of Judge Courtenay Hall which granted visitation to an incarcerated father with his 5-year old daughter.  The father, Christopher Culver, 35, a former Shenendehowa elementary school teacher, pleaded guilty in 2008 to a 49-count indictment which included 29 counts of first degree sexual abuse arising from his molestation of 8 of Culver's first grade male students.
    Case #2 Suffolk County
During the visitation hearing in January, Judge Tarantino joked about child pornography, misstated the facts of the case, refused to hear expert testimony regarding sexual-abuse recidivism and maintained an "inappropriate" relationship with the father's attorney, according to the complaint. The complaint was filed Tuesday with the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct by Parents for Megan's Law and the Crime Victims Center, a Long Island advocacy group. It was also forwarded to the OCA, which is independent from the commission The OCA transferred the judge out of Family Court on Monday, based on the allegations underlying the complaint.
     Case #3 Brooklyn NY
Brooklyn mom jailed for 50 days for keeping son from visiting serial rapist dad
